What's going on in Venezuela?

The MSM, and even some relatively independent news outlets, depict Venezuela as a starving country which requires foreign intervention.

This show from a US journalist (22 minutes) seems to portray a different reality:

So what's actually going on there?

A guy I used to work with is from there. I've stayed in touch with him. He still visits family. He says people are not starving, everything is fine, don't believe the US media. Says I should come down to visit and see, I'm welcome to stay with his family.

So maybe it's like those stories of Syrian chemical weapons and when the first reporters get on the scene everybody there says "Huh?" and there are no bodies and no chemical residue.
