UK? Aren't they at a northern latitude and most days it's either overcast or raining?

True, but offshore wind in the North sea and North of Scotland is developing very quickly and is now half the price of the government guaranteed price for nuclear.

So what do you do about shipping? Obviously these areas are now no-go zones but is that a problem? Are they areas where no ships went anyway?

Commercial shipping in the channel and north sea keep to closely defined shipping lanes.
The windmills are made of steel so they show up on radar pretty well.
Yachtsmen generally look where they're going, don't go out in very bad weather and avoid the shallower parts.
Fishermen - not many fish left in the North Sea these days!

I dont think that currently a very few (up to 3?) type of energy source could fulfill the whole power requirements of a developed nation, hence the energy mix. As long as the renewables percentage are rising amongst this mix than it's fine.
