When I do the cost of living calculator I find I would have to make $229k to have the same lifestyle in the Bay Area that I have here. There are quite a few places in town that pay what I make and they are not Google or other well known "big tech" firms.

In my last job search, a Google recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn.  I was rejected without a technical interview.  Studying algorithms wouldn't have matterec.

Yes, there is a certain bias against PHP. The recruiter has probably heard "don't send us any more candidates with PHP on their resumes".

That's too bad. Just because it has some flaws doesn't mean people who work with it aren't capable engineers. Heck, Facebook runs an optimized PHP.
