Give ne back my hat!

Companies want "JIT" employees.

"Just-In-Time" employees are required to have xyz skills and know xyz technologies.

Companies don't do training/grooming people anymore unless it is Exxon where they rotate chemical engineers throughout sales/marketing/management/engineering departments.

All of us in software industry are a JIT.

Not me. And I'm not in software industry. Best you can say about me is that I'm in defense, when everyone knows I've offended you at least a few times.

People here as in BB, Idiot, Hubble or Legion. I haven't offended you so far because I respect you, but, as you obviously know, that has a limit.

Second tires as Quant, FSK: you have achieved nothing so fat. Far. What makes you think the future is going to be different?

Third tires such as NPR, WR, Bluebeard. I stopped being an omega when I realised it won't get me to alpha. I stopped being an aplha when I realised it wont get me to i.

Well, IO, because you're not in Software, this thread doesn't apply to you, correct.

But this is common these days:

1.  Companies want to hire expertise "JIT", with no training.

2.  Companies don't want to pay market rates for this.

3.  Therefore companies REALLY want to hire fresh-outs for peanuts, because they don't know any better, or H1B's for less than peanuts, because they can.  And their justification for this is points 1) and 2) above.  "We can't find talent (at the price we want to pay)!  There's a shortage of talent!  Can has H1B's?"

Then they just leave the positions empty apparently, until they CAN get fresh-outs or H1Bs.  And if they can't, they continue to leave the positions empty.

Hopefully, the low unemployment rate, and the poor performance of outsourcing and H1B productivity, will lead the companies to make a New Deal where training and full pay and "Employee Development" become valuable things.  Hopefully.  I'm not holding my breath.

Interesting perspective from the Indian side:

Funny, I didn't realize the "jobs moving West" was happening yet.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here but it's always entertaining.

I thought it meant "not as obnoxious" as the second tier, but I could easily have misunderstood.

I honestly don't get what Io said when he lumped me in with a few others. It was kind of incoherent.

But I like the guy fine, even when he drinks heavily which seems to be taking place right now, and I hope he owns a nice decorative necklace made out of Nicolae Ceaușescu's rotten molars.

Io's only missing a couple teeth, but they've been replaced with stainless steel.

He's always got a couple days stubble.

His upper arms are well developed because he spends a lot of time lifting things and doing hobbies such as welding old cars together to make weird things.

Sometimes after the third 750 of Vodka he climbs to the top of a bridge.

One time Io visited my weekend house and saw I had an old  broken tractor rusting in the back yard.

He said he'd fix it, needing only vodka for pay.

After $300 in vodka and a couple trips to a local scrap yard, the tractor was running, but could only go in circles. It also had some weird new section welded to the engine that no one to this day has been able to determine the function of.

Another time he wanted me to accompany him to meet a friend in a suburb of Maryland. When Io showed up he was wearing sunglasses, Italian shoes, and a $2000 Armani suit, perfectly custom fitted.

I asked him about a bulge under his jacket, he said it was nothing, then giggled.

The guys we met spoke in Albanian. They were smoking foul smelling cigarettes with a label printed in Burmese.

There was an exchange and as Io stuffed the suitcase into the trunk I got a glimpse of the automatic rifle he was hiding under the suit.

To this day I have no idea what that was about.

Maryland? I think you got the state wrong. It must has been Joisey. Did you meet up with the Jewish gang? I recall we have a rabbi gangster in here. I think his name starts with an "S". I don't remember the rest of the letters.

My current contract is decent.  So I feel like I moved up from "complete career failure" to "somewhat respectable job".

I still feel like I'm severely underperforming my actual ability level.

The only solution I can think of is bootstrapping my own business.  I'd rather spend a couple hundred hours writing a product (indie game) than spending a couple hundred hours practicing interview questions to maybe grovel for a job.

Aw, some companies just LOVE that "Indentured servitude" employee.  They have no choice about job, salary, duration, or rights.
