Anyone ever set up Hadoop on a laptop?

I follow the directions, and the installer hangs. Is there some trick out there by any chance?

I did It yesterday!

But I cheated... I download the Clooudera Quick start VM and used that.

Yeah, I did that too. I'd just rather run it natively on Windows because for VM's I've got to hook up my giant screen.

Do all VM's run as Java apps?

All Java Apps run in a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), yes.

But are all Apps really Java apps?  Inquiring minds want to know.
