News reports I heard today say prices might take off soon, affecting auto makers in a big way.

Seems to me big brother is getting the proles ready for pain.

I saw a really annoying commercial yesterday run several times advertising a new production hybrid and saying it was rated at something like 59mpg and noting that was the highest US EPA rating in history for a sedan. As you may recall some hybrids people hyper-miled to get 75+mpg but they were rated in the 40s.

First thought was, hmmm, the plan must be for gas prices to go up now. Tillerson's in charge.

You need a hybrid for 40 mpg?

That is what my 17 year old car uses, bought at the end of its production cycle using 1980's engine technology.

Yeah I routinely get 60 in my diesel, but it's rated in the 30s I think.

Your european standards and your gallon size by the way are different though so the same care rated 60 in europe will be rated 35 in the US.

We don't use gallons or miles at all.

It's litres and kilometres in the rest of the world.

My gasoline car was rated at 17 km/l, in practice it is 15 km/l driving at 130 km/h on the highway, or 22 km/l driving leisurely on country roads.

Oil prices are way too low right now.  $55/barrel?  The market can sustain more than double that.

I guess PR is talking about the UK. Uniquely in Europe - at least, in Europe for now - we use miles per gallon, but with larger gallons than in the US.

So for example I was a bit surprised when I hired an people carrier in America about 10 years ago - a 2L I4 I think? - and its trip computer said it was getting 25mpg on the highway!

But then I found out that this was 30mpg in Imperial terms.

And to be honest... I was stil quite surrpised?

My diesel car (2.9L I6, model year 2001) gets 16km/L on the motorway (~46mpg Imperial; ~37mpg US) or 11km/L (~30mpg Imperial; ~25mpg US) for stop/start-type town driving.

Highway = probably ~70mph (~115km/h) averaged out. I typically set the cruise control for 75mph, but roadworks (50mph limit) and general traffic probably drag the average down a bit.

Hard to say what stop/start town driving means for certain, but going by my car's computer, when I fill it up after a month of nothing but, it means ~17mph (~27km/h).

Oil consumption is high enough that the price can be manipulated for some time yet.
