Is 6.9% economic growth in China a credible figure?

Well, my latest employer is Chinese.

I'm sure it's legit. However some of it is stuff like them building empty cities, which is economic activity from their vast cash reserves, but appears to be futile.

On the other hand a lot of it is them making everything in the world and selling the parts and raw materials including iron and rare earth elements to their competitors.

I'm sure during industrialization in the 19th century europeans couldn't believe the growth numbers coming out of the US. Aren't those guys just a bunch of farmers and criminals? What do they know? They were surprised we were able to help them at all in WWI and WWII.
