Bulgaria

has complained that Turkey is meddling in their internal political affairs.

There are 10% Turks in Bulgaria with a double nationality.
Erdogan has now ordered those Turks, as Turkish nationals, to vote for an until now tiny party that will represent Erdogan.

Bulgaria has also recently refused entrance to three Turkish imams, on the charge of inciting unrest.

Usual approach is to use intimidation on the unwilling.

It is not that hard to dominate a an isolated group from the inside.

On the other hand there is a lot of spontaneous support for Erdogan under expats, who used to struggle with discrimination and identity, and here is a loud and powerful one to embrace.

Isn't this like the Jewish in the US? The Jewish in the US overwhelmingly base their politics on what is best for Israel. Just about every group worldwide that self-identifies as something else often have such conflicted motives.

Polish expats living abroad are allowed to vote in Polish parliamentary elections even if they haven't been to Poland for decades and have no clue about the reality of living in Poland. (I am guilty of this too. But I doubt I will bother voting in the next Polish elections which will be in 2019.)

In the last Polish elections (2015), the support for crazy far-right parties have been much higher among Poles living in the UK than in Poland itself. I think it's a similar effect. It's easier to support crazos if you're not going to suffer the consequences (vide Idiot's praise for Geert Wilders).

Poland and Ireland come to mind.

Franco was not so much an ally of the Axis countries, but of the Vatican.

In Germany, the Catholic Church is still a formal part of the state (next to the Lutheran Church).

You're mistaken. Vatican was often at odds with the Polish hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church. And usually the Polish hierarchy got the upper hand.

Ah, "bite", the casual dismissal as a troll. Yet US Jews are overwhelming coherent in their voting patterns, and have been a critical foundation of a lot of Republican rule (hey look the only foreign aid recipient who isn't seeing cuts under Trump is Israel. Strange, right?)

Ergodan can't order those living in Bulgaria to do anything, but he can recommend. In the same way that the various Jewish groups put out the call for every Jew to always find a rationalization to vote for whatever party is towing the Israeli line on Palestine, settlements, etc.

"Don't you think that the election of a Pole as Pope didn't have an enormous influence on Polish politics?"

It did, but this influence began to wane after 1989. It was then pretty one-sided: Poland limited abortion rights to please Wojtyla, but when he wanted the Polish church to make things up with the Jews, the Polish church ignored him.

The strength of the influence of Rome varies in time and place.

At the moment they are leaning more to the Southern Hemisphere, but the African Catholic moral values would alienate the European remnants.

They are also moving nearer to the Orthodox Church.

I'm guessing that the Saudis have threatened him somehow.

Yes, it does. It's another signal to the Arabs that Jerusalem is in Jewish control from this point forward.

_Some_ Democrats. Obama and Kerry and Bernie, yes. Hillary, not so much. Schumer, Booker, Menendez, there're as good as Republicans on this issue.

And notice how Bernie got his way on the platform on so many issues but was totally shut down on Israel.

>Israelis do resent that their capital is treated as a settlement...

Yes they do. Particularly since the Embassy would be in _West_ Jerusalem, not in the Old City and not in an Arab neighborhood.

But then again, to Palestinians, Tel Aviv is a settlement, as is Rananana, as is Haifa, as is Herzliya...
