Give ne back my hat!

Build something and they will come

In some thread below, someone was mocking the mentality of developers with side projects as a naive 'implement it and they will come'.

Thinking about it, what other choice you got? If you just wave some idea, with 100% probability, noone will come.

It's like playing the lottery, buy the ticket and maybe the money will come. Not buying *and* expecting to win though, that's insane. And yet what the vast majority of devs without a side project hope.

It's not either-or.

You need to build a little, show to some people.
If they're interested, build a little more.
Etc.

It's not that easy with things which either work 100% or not at all.

My time is more valuable than to treat spending it like playing the lottery.

In one of the videos, John Sonmez said that whatever you do as side project, it should be force multipliers. It means you have to benefit more than one thing when doing side project for it to be worthwhile.

As a college kid you show some basic skill to potential employers. Afer a few years you get to practice architecture, large scale app design. Then you get to practice marketing, sales and project management if you pay someone (even cheap UpWork contracts) to do something, anything. And you get to use it yourself in the first place, if not even you want it, then why wonder it's got the life chances of an aborted fetus?

But for truly extraordinary people, their time is so valuable they can't afford to build something for themselves.

The secret of success is not about building it yourself. That is worker bee goal. The secret of success is getting other people to build it for you. Ask all the billionaires and they will tell you why that is.

I just decided to rent an apartment 5 minutes walk from work and I'm contemplating all the free time this thing brings.

Or build UberEscort to piggy back the existing escort services.

Lots of stressed out developers nearby. What could defuse all this tension?

Right. The first thing you need is to recruit good looking women.

There are some games and apps that are good enough they can spread virally though Twitter/Facebook/Reddit/etc.

But it's rare.

To get enough income to pay for your living expenses isn't as hard.  I see so many games with obvious bugs that I think I could do better.
