Seriously, how about less fucking meta?

Co-worker is using the FREE version of Visual Studio...

I asked you guys awhile back about the free version of Visual Studio, whether you can use it for commercial use.

http://www.crazyontap.com/topic.php?TopicId=325046&Posts=19

The consensus seemed to be no.  We're not selling the software but it is a big company and we use our software internally.

A new co-worker didn't have Visual Studio on his workstation so he took it upon himself to download the free version.

He's running the newest version and developed a couple applications on it.  I'm running 2008 (PAID version).

I'm in a little bit of a dilemma.  Should I keep developing in 2008 even though it is outdated?  Should I upgrade to the free one even though it would not be in compliance?  If we're audited, I could get the blame from management.  Or should I deliver the bad news to management that we need upgrades and they need to pay for it?  Of course they don't want to hear that, when someone else is developing software on a free version that they don't have to pay for.  Any suggestions?

Really?  When they've opened the door for Microsoft to come eat their lunch, for using a Microsoft product "illegally"?

I'd think they'd WANT to hear that, some time BEFORE Microsoft comes knocking.

Have you ever heard the term "Configuration Control"?  It's quite popular, and covers the situation where YOU are using Studio 2008, while newby tries to use Studio 2016 or whatever.

You're right, although I recall the last manager bitching that he had to pay for Visual Studio.

Not really but I have heard of auditing.  Corporate done audits before and asked us to remove software from computers.

OP you moron, you are perfectly capable of reading the license as well as us. Stop wasting our time.

IS YOUR COMPANY AN 'ENTERPRISE' ACCORDING TO THE DEFINITION IN THE LICENSE? YES OR NO?

OBVIOUSLY YES.

TELL ME THE NAME. I WILL CONTACT MICROSOFT. THERE IS A REWARD FOR SNITCHING.

I was going to go to the director but don't want to throw the other guy under the bus.  The director knows nothing about programming.

That won't be necessary PR.  I will inform the director and hopefully he does the needful.

Visual Studio 2015 has some funky licensing scheme. You have to log in and it checks for a license. You can pay for different editions of VS2015 monthly or annually. Our "company" has some volume licensing scheme and once we got that straightened out, I have the scheme where the company takes the license away when I quit. Although my MSDN subscription includes product keys for various editions of VS (use the product key and it is registered forever).
