What do you geeks do on weekends?

Wtf, people play with Haskell on weekends? Student assignments perhaps?

Looking at apartment complexes and evaluating real estate deals.

Working on a freshwater aquarium. This weekend I need to re-do the paint job on the back.

Netflix and youtube binges. Catching up on Shark Tank.

What is the obsession with aquariums? It's such a developer thing, at the last place I worked there were FIVE guys with aquariums in a team of twelve developers.

The one guy has something like eight tanks, he said he was paying a fortune in electricity.

"What is the obsession with aquariums? It's such a developer thing, "

It started for me as a kid. The first one was a failure and the fish died. Somehow the second one turned out great. I turned it into a paludarium with fish and newts. Then I graduated to a 30 gallon and kept glowlight tetras successfully, and even got them to spawn. It was kind of addictive as well as relaxing, and I miss having the display of fish and lush plants to look at.

I guess there is also a "systems" component involved -- the way everything forms an ecosystem, and how water chemistry is involved. Those things appeal to geeks.

I'm not planning on getting 8 aquariums, though. :)

At one point as a teen, I had a 72 gallon tank.  The size that my pleco grew to was glorious.  A buddy of mine raised Discus and they were glorious.  I could never afford anything so fancy.  The aquarium itself was given to me because someone was throwing it away.

It's all kind of sciency, right?  I mean, you regulate food, ph levels, vegetation, waste disposal, filtration, lighting, etc.  An ongoing experiment...

I was thinking that is silly and I've never heard of developers having aquariums as a thing.

However, I have a 2 acre artificial wetlands I had built at my weekend home. It involved bulldozers, backhoes, flatbeds with cranes coming in with huge boulders, exotic concrete and stone work, and massive circulation pumps. There's tons of things in there, including some fairly large species. I guess I'm in to it for the equivalent of a couple million so far.

So I shouldn't talk.

Why do people talk about personal info like that at work?

"Why do people talk about personal info like that at work?"

It's hardly "personal". Personal is dragging your domestic issues, problems to work.

Because talking about work all the time is boring.

It is fun to find common interests with others. How else do you connect emotionally?

Legion, you making pretend you are friends with people at work when in reality none of them care about you.

This is work. You are only there because you need money. They are there to make money.

Stop believing the corporate bullshit that says that you are all one big family. Stop being so needy

Chump.

It gets tiring after several weeks. The continuing disappointments. 1 in 30 flats you see is a keeper.
