Grounded

Do grounding your child (as shown in American TV when you prohibits your child to leave the house for a period) works?
Is it an American parenting culture?

Some people do this.

What method of discipline do you prefer? Beatings?

No.  It's a "television thing", where in sit-coms, the parents have to do something in response to bad behavior, that sets up the kids sneaking out of the house.  In sit-coms, this is hilarious, along with ineffective dads, and over-bearing mothers.

Real world punishments with foreign policy analogies:

- stern talking to (i.e. what the EU is doing to Poland)
- beating (i.e. what Russia did to Ukraine)
- withdrawal of pocket money (i.e. what the EU is doing to Greece)
- throwing a hissy fit (i.e. what Trump wants to do to everyone who double-crosses him)

More realistic punishments are "No electronics".  Meaning no TV, no video games, no Game-Boy, no Wii.  Only what's necessary to get your homework done.

Not everything in sitcoms is legit but it's often based on or are exaggeration of real practices.

In every culture there are things they are more likely to do than others, but not everyone does them.

US is, or used to be (before SJWitis) individualistic. That's the commonality.

Kids do get grounded in the US by some parents.

Others get time-outs (go sit in the corner for an hour).

Others lose privileges: no TV, no computer, no video games, no going outside (similar to grounding), no car.

Others get spankings.

Others get shunning, the silent treatment.

Others get a long embarassing shameful talk from sweet live-in grandma about how disappointed she is in them. (This is said by many to be the worst.)

All of these vary by age level.

But again OP: You're here because you see something wrong with this practice and you want to feel smug and superior. That's because you're an insufferable elitist asshole.

It's required though that you tell us in detail about your own culture's discipline practices.

If you fail to do this, I'll press delete on every post of yours forever.

I got grounded a lot when I was a kid. Took a beating only in extreme cases, like when I got "lost" once when with my parents at a pool, to try without permission taking a dip in the deep one, without knowing how to swim, of course.

Taking a pair of slappings from my father was not the worst thing that could have happened that day :P

Man, I wish I got grounded. Got heavily lectured instead. I'd even have preferred physical punishment.

Yes, the worst punishment is being lectured to exhaustion.

Pro tip: it was exhausting for your parents too.
